Dona Antonia is the blend of selected wines whose average age is six years and is meant to combine the intensity of a young ruby with the mellowness of a tawny, acquired through a sufficient maturation in casks. After the vintage, the wines stay in the Douro until the following spring. When brought to Vila Nova de Gaia, they are drawn off into 600 litre oak casks. The first two years the different lots are kept unblended in order to give them time to show their characteristics. During this period, each individual cask is racked four or five times a year. Then the final blending occurs and the wine is commercialised.
