The Wine Enthusiast - A prodigious effort from a small house that⤙s becoming one of the Douro⤙s best. The fruit is massive; huge and inky and filled with blackberries and chocolate. Yet for all its size, it finishes with finesse-filled layers of flavor that fold in mint and black pepper notes. Score: 97. November 15, 2003.

The Wine Spectator - A harmonious, powerful young thing. Super aromas of flowers and berries, with hints of wet earth and tobacco. Full-bodied and racy, with loads of silky tannins and a long, long finish. Medium sweet. It builds on your palate and then, wham. Serious stuff. Best after 2011. Score: 94. —James Suckling, May 15, 2003.

2000 Niepoort Vintage Port the reason that I enjoyed this competition was that I had rated this my top wine of the vintage and it was great to try these two, side-by-side a year later. Dark purple-centric color with full opacity. The Niepoort will require sandblasting of teeth, rather than a toothbrush itself. Violets, spicy cinnamon and freshly picked floral notes. Succulent, ripe juices with chewy, concentrated sweet fruit on the initial palate attack. The brash tannins come in with the second wave, and then the unforgettable 45-second finish dominates the tongue and mind. Phenomenal wine that may someday show as well as the 1927 did this weekend at 76 years of age. 98+ points Roy Hersh

Rolf van der Niepoort must be proud of his son Dirk, who has now produced 2 exceptional VPs in a row. Dark, deeply extracted purplish-black and fully opaque, this is a superlative wine. By far the biggest most unctuous young Niepoort Ive ever tried, and I have long been a fan of this Shipper. A somewhat unyielding nose of violets and grapey aromas, although the brooding dark berry fruit is ultra-rich, viscous and refined for a youngster. This wine possesses a certain freshness that I thoroughly enjoyed. Magnificent balance and layers of flavor with juicy, ripe tannins that along with the minute long finish, overwhelm the palate. I tasted this wine a few times and it was my personal favorite of all 2000 VPs. I believe this may someday rival the legendary 1945 Niepoort, which is a bold statement to make at this stage. A must purchase for any serious Porto lover ... and this is a VP that will live to welcome the next century. 98-100 points Roy Hersh http://www.wineloverspage.com/port/2000forecast.phtml
